Claire Barclay (b.1968, Paisley) is known for work which takes the form of highly crafted sculptural objects brought together into precisely plotted relationships. Barclay’s 2009 exhibition Openwide at Fruitmarket presented the range of her practice, balancing work made specially for the Gallery with a selection of objects made throughout her career. Installations were composed of large structural supporting elements and smaller objects, with the structural support operating like a backdrop or stage set – the objects made of familiar materials such as leather, iron and wood, but crafted into strangely functionless things.
This screenprint is one of a series titled A Life Livelier , shown in Openwide alongside the artist s three-dimensional work. The prints are made from a variety of simple, bold shapes that Barclay cut from paper then used as templates to create the forms on the printing screen. Working in the positive rather than negative the printed forms have a close relationship to the sculptural forms, and relationship between the forms, in Barclay s work.
